The Humble Cauliflower
In the continued search for finding wheat alternatives that will allow those avoiding wheat to still enjoy their favorite treats, finding a replacement for pizza bases led to the invention of a cauliflower pizza base. This has led to the meme “If cauliflower can become pizza, YOU can become anything!”.
How to Make a Cauliflower Pizza Base
Making a pizza base out of cauliflower requires taking a head of cauliflower and pulsing it in a food processor until the cauliflower has ground to small, fine pieces. Then boil or steam the cauliflower for a few minutes, drain off all water, and then mix in a bowl with spices, cheese, and eggs. Use your hands to create the dough and bake for twenty minutes (before adding toppings), to cook the base. Then add your favorite topping and cook!
A few things to remember:
- Pulsing cauliflower florets and boiling is also a technique to make cauliflower rice, a suitable law carbohydrate alternative;
- After baking the base, you can store in an art-tight container and freeze. To use, simply thaw and add your toppings and bake. You can make your bases in advance and in bulk, particularly because the process can be quite labor-intensive and time-consuming.
